حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرًا يَقُولُ مَرِضْتُ فَأَتَانِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعُودُنِي هُوَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ مَاشِيَيْنِ وَقَدْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيَّ فَلَمْ أُكَلِّمْهُ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَصَبَّهُ عَلَيَّ فَأَفَقْتُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ فِي مَالِي وَلِي أَخَوَاتٌ قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْمِيرَاثِ { يَسْتَفْتُونَكَ قُلْ اللَّهُ يُفْتِيكُمْ فِي الْكَلَالَةِ } كَانَ لَيْسَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ وَلَهُ أَخَوَاتٌ { إِنْ امْرُؤٌ هَلَكَ لَيْسَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ وَلَهُ أُخْتٌ }.

Sufyan told us, from Ibn al-Munkadir, that he heard Jabir say: I fell ill, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came to visit me, he and Abu Bakr, walking, while I was unconscious and could not speak to him. So he performed ablution and poured it over me, and I regained consciousness. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with my property? I have sisters." Then the verse of inheritance was revealed: "They ask you for a ruling; say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning one who has no descendants or parents" — this concerned a case where there was no child and there were sisters — "If a man dies leaving no child but leaving a sister..."
