English Translation
'Abdullah said: "Whoever shows off, Allah will expose him. Whoever seeks praise, Allah will publicize his (true state). Whoever exalts himself arrogantly, Allah will humble him. Whoever humbles himself in reverence, Allah will elevate him. People are either given abundance in this world and restriction in the Hereafter, or restriction in this world and abundance in the Hereafter, or restriction in both, or abundance in both. And there is one who rests and one from whom others find rest." We asked: "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, what is the one who rests and the one from whom others find rest?" He said: "As for the one who rests, it is the believer — when he dies, he finds rest. As for the one from whom others find rest, it is the one who wrongs people and backbites them."
