English Translation
Abu Umamah said: The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) sat one day among a group of his companions and raised his hand and said: "Who will pledge allegiance to me?" - three times. No one stood up except Thawban, who said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, we have pledged allegiance to you once, and I pledge allegiance to you a second time. On what shall I pledge, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "That you will not ask people for anything, and Paradise will be yours." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, if I pledge allegiance to you and do not ask people for anything, is Paradise mine?" He said: "Yes, if Allah wills." He said: "No! By the One Who sent you with the truth, I will not ask for anything as long as I remain in this world."
