English Translation
Abu Jurayy said: "I said: 'Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Do not say "upon you be peace"; "upon you be peace" is the greeting for the dead. Say "peace be upon you."' I said: 'Are you the Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'I am the Messenger of the God who, when harm befalls you and you call upon Him, He removes it from you; and when a year of drought strikes you and you call upon Him, He grants you relief.' I said: 'Give me a covenant.' He said: 'Do not curse anyone, and do not belittle any act of kindness. Speak to your brother with a cheerful face. Raise your garment to the middle of the shin; if you refuse, then to the ankles. Beware of letting your garment hang, for it is a form of arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. If a man insults you for what he knows about you, do not insult him for what you know about him — the burden of that is upon him.'"
