Arabic (Original)
وعن سلمةَ بن الأَكْوَع أنَّ رَجُلاً أَكَلَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ الله بِشِمَالِهِ ، فَقَالَ : « كُلْ بِيَمِينِكَ » قَالَ : لا أسْتَطِيعُ . قَالَ : « لا اسْتَطَعْتَ » ! مَا مَنَعَهُ إِلا الكِبْرُ ! فَمَا رَفَعَهَا إِلَى فِيهِ . ((رواه مسلم))
English Translation
Salamah bin Al-Akwa' (may Allah be well pleased with him) reported on the authority of his father:A man ate with his left hand in the presence of Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), whereupon he said, "Eat with your right hand." The man said: "I cannot do that." Thereupon he (the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)) said, "May you not be able to do that." It was vanity that prevented him from doing it and he could not raise it (the right hand) up to his mouth afterwards..
Urdu Translation
حضرت سلمہ بن اکوع رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ ایک شخص نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے سامنے بائیں ہاتھ سے کھانا کھایا۔ آپ نے ارشاد فرمایا: دائیں ہاتھ سے کھاؤ۔ اس نے عرض کیا: میں نہیں کر سکتا۔ آپ نے فرمایا: نہ کر سکے! اسے صرف تکبر نے روکا تھا۔ پھر وہ اپنا ہاتھ منہ تک نہ اٹھا سکا۔ (مسلم)
