عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قُلْت يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! أَخْبِرْنِي بِعَمَلٍ يُدْخِلُنِي الْجَنَّةَ وَيُبَاعِدْنِي مِنْ النَّارِ، قَالَ: "لَقَدْ سَأَلْت عَنْ عَظِيمٍ، وَإِنَّهُ لَيَسِيرٌ عَلَى مَنْ يَسَّرَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ: تَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِهِ شَيْئًا، وَتُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ، وَتُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ، وَتَصُومُ رَمَضَانَ، وَتَحُجُّ الْبَيْتَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا أَدُلُّك عَلَى أَبْوَابِ الْخَيْرِ؟ الصَّوْمُ جُنَّةٌ، وَالصَّدَقَةُ تُطْفِئُ الْخَطِيئَةَ كَمَا يُطْفِئُ الْمَاءُ النَّارَ، وَصَلَاةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ، ثُمَّ تَلَا: " تَتَجَافَى جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ " حَتَّى بَلَغَ "يَعْمَلُونَ"، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا أُخْبِرُك بِرَأْسِ الْأَمْرِ وَعَمُودِهِ وَذُرْوَةِ سَنَامِهِ؟ قُلْت: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ. قَالَ: رَأْسُ الْأَمْرِ الْإِسْلَامُ، وَعَمُودُهُ الصَّلَاةُ، وَذُرْوَةُ سَنَامِهِ الْجِهَادُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا أُخْبِرُك بِمَلَاكِ ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ؟ فقُلْت: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ! فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِهِ وَقَالَ: كُفَّ عَلَيْك هَذَا. قُلْت: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّا لَمُؤَاخَذُونَ بِمَا نَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِ؟ فَقَالَ: ثَكِلَتْك أُمُّك وَهَلْ يَكُبُّ النَّاسَ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ -أَوْ قَالَ عَلَى مَنَاخِرِهِمْ- إلَّا حَصَائِدُ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ؟!" . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
English Translation
On the authority of Hadrat Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be well pleased with him), who said: I said: "O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), tell me of a deed that will take me into Paradise and keep me away from the Hellfire." He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "You have asked about a great matter, yet it is easy for him for whom Allah makes it easy: worship Allah without associating any partners with Him, establish the prayer, pay the zakat, fast in Ramadan, and make the pilgrimage to the House." Then he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Shall I not guide you towards the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire; and the prayer of a man in the depths of the night." Then he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) recited: "Their sides forsake their beds..." until he reached "...they used to do." Then he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Shall I not tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and its peak?" I said: "Certainly, O Beloved Messenger of Allah." He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer, and its peak is striving in the way of Allah (jihad)." Then he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Shall I not tell you of the foundation of all of that?" I said: "Certainly, O Beloved Messenger of Allah." So he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) took hold of his blessed tongue and said: "Restrain this." I said: "O Prophet of Allah, will we truly be held accountable for what we say with it?" He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "May your mother grieve for you, O Hadrat Mu'adh! Is there anything that casts people into the Hellfire upon their faces — or upon their noses — except the harvests of their tongues?" Related by at-Tirmidhi, who said it is a good and sound hadith.
Urdu Translation
حضرت معاذ بن جبل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے، فرماتے ہیں: میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ (صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم)! مجھے کوئی ایسا عمل بتائیے جو مجھے جنت میں داخل کرے اور دوزخ سے دور رکھے۔ ارشاد فرمایا: تو نے بڑی بات پوچھی ہے، مگر یہ آسان ہے اس کے لیے جس کے لیے اللہ آسان کردے: اللہ کی عبادت کر، اس کے ساتھ کسی کو شریک نہ ٹھہرا، نماز قائم کر، زکوٰة ادا کر، رمضان کے روزے رکھ، اور بیت اللہ کا حج کر۔ پھر ارشاد فرمایا: کیا میں تجھے بھلائی کے دروازے نہ بتاؤں؟ روزہ ڈھال ہے، صدقہ گناہ کو ایسے مٹاتا ہے جیسے پانی آگ کو بجھاتا ہے، اور آدمی کی رات کے اندھیرے میں نماز (عظیم عمل ہے)۔ پھر آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے یہ آیت تلاوت فرمائی: "تَتَجَافَى جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ" یہاں تک کہ "يَعْمَلُونَ" تک پہنچے۔ پھر ارشاد فرمایا: کیا میں تجھے اس سارے معاملے کی جڑ، اس کا ستون اور اس کی چوٹی نہ بتاؤں؟ میں نے عرض کیا: ضرور، یا رسول اللہ! ارشاد فرمایا: اس معاملے کی جڑ اسلام ہے، اس کا ستون نماز ہے، اور اس کی چوٹی جہاد ہے۔ پھر ارشاد فرمایا: کیا میں تجھے ان سب کی بنیاد نہ بتاؤں؟ میں نے عرض کیا: ضرور، یا رسول اللہ! تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اپنی زبانِ مبارک پکڑی اور فرمایا: اسے قابو میں رکھ۔ میں نے عرض کیا: یا نبی اللہ! کیا ہم اپنی زبان سے کہی ہوئی باتوں پر بھی پکڑے جائیں گے؟ ارشاد فرمایا: تیری ماں تجھے روئے! لوگوں کو ان کے مونہوں — یا فرمایا ناکوں — کے بل دوزخ میں نہیں گراتا مگر ان کی زبانوں کی کاٹی ہوئی فصل! اسے ترمذی نے روایت کیا ہے اور فرمایا: یہ حدیثِ حسن صحیح ہے۔
