English Translation
Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to Madinah, he saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura, so he asked them, "Why do you fast on this day?" They said, "This is a great day on which Allah delivered Musa (peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel (from Pharaoh) and drowned Pharaoh and his people, so Musa (peace be upon him) fasted out of gratitude, and we fast too." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "We are more entitled to Musa (peace be upon him), and closer to him, than you." Then he (peace be upon him) fasted that day and commanded the Companions to fast.
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہجب رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلممدینہ تشریف لائے تو یہود کو دیکھا کہ وہ عاشورہ کے دن روزہ رکھتے ہیں تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ان لوگوں سے پوچھا کہ تم یہ روزہ کیوں رکھتے ہو؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ یہ وہ عظیم دن ہے جس میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے موسیٰ علیہ السلام اور بنی اسرائیل کو (فرعون سے) نجات دی اور فرعون اور اس کی قوم کو غرق کیا، اس لئے مو سیٰ علیہ السلام نے شکرانے کا روزہ رکھا اور ہم بھی رکھتے ہیں۔ تو نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ ہم تم سے زیادہ موسیٰ علیہ السلام کے دوست اور قریب ہیں۔ پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اس دن روزہ رکھا اور صحابہ کو روزہ رکھنے کا حکم دیا۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 613]
