English Translation
Narrated the Mother of the Believers, Aishah as-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out (about) midnight and prayed in the mosque, and a few people prayed with him. Then in the morning the people talked about it, and the next day more people gathered. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) also went out, and the people prayed with him, and in the morning the people talked about it. Then on the third night more people gathered in the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out and the people prayed with him. Then when the fourth night came and the people gathered in such numbers that the mosque became too small, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not come out, and the people began to call, "The prayer, the prayer," but he did not come out, until he came for the Fajr prayer. Then when he had finished the prayer, he turned to the people and recited the two testimonies of faith, and after praising Allah and sending blessings, he said: "Be aware, your state this night was not hidden from me, but I feared that the night prayer (Tarawih) might become obligatory upon you and that you would be unable to perform it." And in one narration: This was an incident of Ramadan. [Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 397]

ام المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے روایت ہے کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم(تقریباً) آدھی رات کو نکلے اور مسجد میں نماز پڑھی اور چند لوگوں نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ نماز ادا کی۔ پھر صبح لوگ اس کا ذکر کرنے لگے اور دوسرے دن اس سے زیادہ لوگ جمع ہوئے۔ اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمبھی نکلے، پھر لوگوں نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ نماز ادا کی اور صبح کو لوگ اس کا ذکر کرنے لگے۔ پھر تیسری رات میں مسجد میں زیادہ لوگ جمع ہوئے اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنکلے اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ لوگوں نے نماز ادا کی۔ پھر جب چوتھی رات ہوئی اور لوگ اس قدر جمع ہوئے کہ مسجد تنگ پڑ گئی اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنہ نکلے تو لوگ”نماز، نماز“پکارنے لگے اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنہ نکلے یہاں تک کہ صبح کی نماز کو آئے پھر جب نماز پڑھ چکے تو لوگوں کی طرف منہ کیا اور شہادتین پڑھا اور حمد و صلوٰۃ کے بعد فرمایا کہ معلوم ہو کہ تمہارا آج کی رات کا حال مجھ پر کچھ پوشیدہ نہ تھا مگر میں نے خوف کیا کہ تم پر رات کی نماز (تراویح) فرض نہ ہو جائے اور تم اس کی ادائیگی سے عاجز ہو جاؤ۔ اور ایک روایت میں ہے کہ یہ رمضان کا واقعہ تھا۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 397]
