English Translation
Narrated Abu Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him): One day, after praying the Fajr prayer, we went early in the morning to the house of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both). We stood at the door and greeted with salam, and we were given permission (to enter). Abu Wa'il says: We waited a little while at the door, and then a young girl came out and said, "Why do you not come inside?" So we went inside and found Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) sitting reciting tasbih. He said, "When you were given permission, what kept you from coming inside?" We said, "Nothing; we thought perhaps some of your household were sleeping." Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "Did you think the household of Ibn Umm Abd to be heedless?" Then he became busy with tasbih until he thought the sun had risen. He said to the girl, "Look, has the sun risen?" Abu Wa'il says: She looked and said, "No, the sun has not yet risen." He again became busy with tasbih until he thought the sun had risen. He again said to the girl, "Look, has the sun risen?" She looked and said, "Yes, the sun has risen." So he said, "All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, who has pardoned us this day of ours." Mahdi said, "I think Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, 'And has not destroyed us on account of our sins.'" Then a man among the people said, "I recited all of the Mufassal chapters this night." So Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "You recited them the way one recites poetry. Indeed we have heard the recitations, and I remember the pairs which the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite — eighteen chapters of the Mufassal and two chapters from the family of Ha Mim." (By 'pairs' are meant the chapters which the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite two together in one rak'ah.) [Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 396]

سیدنا ابووائل رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہہم ایک دن فجر کی نماز پڑھ کر صبح صبح عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما کے گھر گئے۔ پس ہم نے دروازے پر کھڑے ہو کر سلام کہا تو ہمیں اجازت دیدی گئی۔ ابووائل کہتے ہیں کہ ہم تھوڑی دیر دروازے پر ٹھہرے رہے تو ایک بچی نکلی۔ کہنے لگی کہ آپ اندر داخل کیوں نہیں ہوتے؟ چنانچہ ہم اندر داخل ہو گئے تو دیکھا کہ عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما بیٹھے تسبیح پڑھ رہے تھے، فرمانے لگے کہ جب تمہیں اجازت دیدی گئی تھی تو تمہیں اندر داخل ہونے سے کس چیز نے روکا؟ ہم نے کہا اور کچھ نہیں ہم نے خیال کیا کہ آپ کے بعض گھر والے سوئے ہوں گے۔ عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما فرمانے لگے کہ تم نے ابن ام عبد کے اہل خانہ کو غافل خیال کیا ہے؟ پھر وہ تسبیح میں مشغول ہو گئے یہاں تک کہ انہوں نے گمان کیا کہ سورج نکل آیا ہے۔ آپ نے بچی سے کہا دیکھو سورج نکل آیا ہے؟ ابووائل کہتے ہیں پس اس نے دیکھ کر کہا کہ نہیں ابھی سورج طلوع نہیں ہوا۔ وہ پھر تسبیح میں مشغول ہو گئے یہاں تک کہ انہوں نے گمان کیا کہ سورج نکل آیا ہے۔ آپ نے پھر بچی سے کہا، دیکھو سورج نکل آیا ہے؟ تو اس نے دیکھ کر کہا، جی ہاں سورج طلوع ہو چکا ہے تو فرمانے لگے کہ تمام تعریف اللہ رب العالمین کیلئے ہے جس نے معاف کر دیا ہم کو ہمارے اس دن میں۔ مہدی کہتے ہیں، میرا خیال ہے کہ عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا”اور ہمیں ہمارے گناہوں کے سبب ہلاک نہیں کیا“۔ تو لوگوں میں سے ایک آدمی نے کہا کہ میں نے آج کی رات ساری کی ساری مفصل سورتیں پڑھی ہیں۔ تو عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا ھذا کھذ الشعر تم نے ایسے پڑھا جیسا کوئی شعر پڑھتا ہے۔ ہم نے البتہ قرائن کو سنا ہے اور مجھے وہ قرائن یاد ہیں جنہیں نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمپڑھا کرتے تھے۔ وہ اٹھارہ سورتیں مفصل کی اور دو سورتیں آل حم سے ہیں۔ (قرائن سے وہ سورتیں مراد ہیں جنہیں نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمدو دو سورتیں ملا کر ایک رکعت میں پڑھا کرتے تھے)[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 396]
