English Translation
Narrated Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Adam and Moses (peace be upon them both) disputed before their Lord, and Adam (peace be upon him) prevailed over Moses (peace be upon him). Moses (peace be upon him) said, 'You are that Adam whom Allah, the Exalted, created with His own hand, breathed into you of His spirit, and made the angels prostrate to you (that is, a prostration of greeting, not of worship — and a prostration of greeting was permissible at that time, whereas in our religion prostrating to anyone other than Allah has become forbidden), and gave you a place to dwell in His Paradise; then, because of your fault, you caused people to be sent down to the earth.' Adam (peace be upon him) said, 'You are that Moses whom Allah, the Exalted, chose as His Prophet and by speaking to (directly), and to whom Allah, the Exalted, gave the tablets of the noble Torah in which is the explanation of everything, and whom He brought near for private discourse. Now, what do you think — how long before my creation did Allah, the Exalted, write the Torah?' Moses (peace be upon him) said, 'Forty years.' Adam (peace be upon him) said, 'Have you not read in the Torah: \"And Adam disobeyed the command of his Lord and erred\"?' Moses (peace be upon him) said, 'Yes indeed, I have read it.' Adam (peace be upon him) said, 'Then do you blame me for doing a deed that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, wrote in my decree forty years before I was created?'" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "So Adam (peace be upon him) prevailed over Moses (peace be upon him)."
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا: آدم اور موسیٰ علیہما السلام نے اپنے رب کے پاس بحث کی تو آدم علیہ السلام موسیٰ علیہ السلام پر غالب ہوئے۔ موسیٰ علیہ السلام نے کہا کہ تم وہی آدم ہو جن کو اللہ تعالیٰ نے اپنے ہاتھ سے بنایا، اپنی روح تم میں پھونکی اور تمہیں فرشتوں سے سجدہ کرایا (یعنی سلامی کا سجدہ نہ کہ عبادت کا اور سلامی کا سجدہ اس وقت جائز تھا اور ہمارے دین میں اللہ کے سوا کسی دوسرے کو سجدہ کرنا حرام ہو گیا) اور تمہیں اپنی جنت میں رہنے کو جگہ دی، پھر تم نے اپنی خطا کی وجہ سے لوگوں کو زمین پر اتار دیا۔ آدم علیہ السلام نے کہا کہ تم وہ موسیٰ ہو جن کو اللہ تعالیٰ نے اپنا پیغمبر کر کے اور کلام کر کے چن لیا اور تمہیں اللہ تعالیٰ نے تورات شریف کی تختیاں دیں جن میں ہر بات کا بیان ہے اور تمہیں سرگوشی کے لئے اپنے نزدیک کیا اور تم کیا سمجھتے ہو کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے تورات کو میرے پیدا ہونے سے کتنی مدت پہلے لکھا ہے؟ سیدنا موسیٰ علیہ السلام نے کہا کہ چالیس برس۔ آدم علیہ السلام نے کہا کہ تم نے تورات میں نہیں پڑھا کہ”آدم نے اپنے رب کے فرمان کے خلاف کیا اور بھٹک گیا“۔ موسیٰ علیہ السلام نے کہا کہ کیوں نہیں میں نے پڑھا ہے۔ آدم علیہ السلام نے کہا کہ پھر تم مجھے اس کام کے کرنے پر ملامت کرتے ہو جو اللہ عزوجل نے میری تقدیر میں میرے پیدا ہونے سے چالیس برس پہلے لکھ دیا تھا؟ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ پس آدم علیہ السلام موسیٰ علیہ السلام پر غالب آ گئے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1842]
