Hadrat Sufyan ibn 'Uyainah said: Ayyub narrated to us, saying: I heard Muhammad ibn Sirin say: I heard Hadrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be well pleased with him) say: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) led us in one of the two afternoon prayers — Zuhr or 'Asr — and gave salutation after two rak'ahs. Then he went to a palm-trunk placed towards the qibla in the mosque and leaned against it looking as if he were displeased. Among the people were Hadrat Abu Bakr and Hadrat 'Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both), but they were too awed to speak to him. Meanwhile, the hasty ones among the people went out saying: The prayer has been shortened. Then a man called Dhul-Yadain stood up and submitted: O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), has the prayer been shortened or have you forgotten? The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) looked right and left and asked: 'What is Dhul-Yadain saying?' They submitted: He is right — you only prayed two rak'ahs. So he prayed two more rak'ahs and gave salutation, then said takbir and prostrated, then said takbir and raised his head, then said takbir and prostrated, then said takbir and raised his head. (Muhammad ibn Sirin) said: I was told on the authority of Hadrat 'Imran ibn Husain (may Allah be well pleased with him) that he said: And then he pronounced the salutation.

سفیان بن عیینہ نے کہا: ہم سے ایوب نے حدیث بیان کی، انہوں نے کہا: میں نے محمد بن سیرین سے سنا، وہ کہہ رہے تھے: میں نے حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے سنا، وہ کہہ رہے تھے: ہمیں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے دوپہر کے بعد کی ایک نماز، ظہر یا عصر، پڑھائی اور دو رکعتوں کے بعد سلام پھیر دیا، پھر قبلے کی سمت (گڑے ہوئے) کھجور کے ایک تنے کے پاس آئے اور غصے کی کیفیت میں اس سے ٹیک لگا لی۔ لوگوں میں حضرت ابو بکر و حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما موجود (بھی) تھے، انہوں نے آپ کی ہیبت کی بنا پر گفتگو نہ کی جبکہ جلد باز لوگ (نماز پڑھتے ہی) نکل گئے، اور کہنے لگے: نماز میں کمی ہو گئی ہے۔ تو ذوالیدین (نامی شخص) کھڑا ہوا اور عرض کی: اے اللہ کے رسول! کیا نماز مختصر کر دی گئی ہے یا آپ بھول گئے ہیں؟ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے دائیں اور بائیں دیکھ کر پوچھا: ''ذوالیدین کیا کہہ رہا ہے؟'' لوگوں نے عرض کی: سچ کہہ رہا ہے، آپ نے دو رکعتیں ہی پڑھی ہیں۔ چنانچہ آپ نے دو رکعتیں (مزید) پڑھیں اور سلام پھیر دیا، پھر اللہ اکبر کہا اور سجدہ کیا، پھر اللہ اکبر کہا اور سر اٹھایا، پھر اللہ اکبر کہا اور سجدہ کیا، پھر اللہ اکبر کہا اور سر اٹھایا۔ (محمد بن سیرین نے) کہا: حضرت عمران بن حصین رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے حوالے سے مجھے بتایا گیا کہ انہوں نے کہا: اور سلام پھیرا۔
