Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them) narrated: While he was sitting with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), Hadrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah ennoble his countenance) came and said: 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! This Quran slips from my chest and I cannot retain it.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: 'O Abu al-Hasan, shall I not teach you words by which Allah will benefit you, benefit those whom you teach, and make firm what you have learned in your chest?' He said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, teach me.' He stated: 'On the night of Jumu'ah (Friday), if you can stand in the last third of the night — for it is a witnessed hour and supplications are answered therein, and that is what my brother Ya'qub meant when he said to his sons: I shall seek forgiveness for you from my Lord, meaning he waited until the night of Jumu'ah. If you cannot, then stand in the middle of it. If you cannot, then at its beginning. Pray four rak'ahs: in the first recite al-Fatihah and Surah Yasin, in the second al-Fatihah and Ha-Mim al-Sajdah, in the third al-Fatihah and Ha-Mim al-Dukhan, and in the fourth al-Fatihah and Tabarak al-Mufassal. When you finish the tashahhud, praise Allah and glorify Him, send blessings upon me and upon all the Prophets, seek forgiveness for the believing men and women, and for your brothers who preceded you in faith. Then say at the end: O Allah, have mercy on me by enabling me to abandon sins forever as long as You keep me alive; have mercy on me by not burdening me with what does not concern me; grant me good insight into what pleases You; O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of Majesty and Honor and Might that cannot be resisted, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your Majesty and the Light of Your Countenance, to make my heart adhere to the memorization of Your Book as You have taught me, and grant me that I recite it in the manner that pleases You. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of Majesty and Honor, I ask You to illuminate my sight with Your Book, to make my tongue fluent with it, to relieve my heart with it, to expand my chest with it, and to occupy my body with it. For none helps me upon the truth except You, and none grants it except You, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. O Abu al-Hasan, do this for three Jumu'ahs, or five, or seven — you will be answered by Allah's permission. By the One who sent me with the truth, no believer has ever failed with it.' Ibn Abbas said: By Allah, Ali waited only five or seven (Fridays) until he came to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in a similar gathering and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, previously I could barely learn four verses before they would slip away. But now I learn forty verses or so, and when I recite them to myself, it is as if the Book of Allah is before my eyes. And I used to hear a hadith and when I wanted to repeat it, it would slip away. But now I hear hadiths and when I narrate them, I do not miss a single letter.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said at that: 'A true believer, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, O Abu al-Hasan!'

حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ وہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس بیٹھے ہوئے تھے کہ حضرت علی بن ابی طالب کرم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم آئے اور عرض کیا: میرے ماں باپ آپ پر قربان ہوں یا رسول اللہ! یہ قرآن میرے سینے سے نکلا جاتا ہے اور میں اسے یاد نہیں رکھ پاتا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: 'اے ابو الحسن! کیا میں تمہیں ایسے کلمات نہ سکھاؤں جن سے اللہ تمہیں فائدہ پہنچائے، جسے تم سکھاؤ اسے فائدہ پہنچائے، اور جو تم نے سیکھا ہے اسے تمہارے سینے میں مضبوط کر دے؟' عرض کیا: ہاں یا رسول اللہ! مجھے سکھائیے۔ فرمایا: 'جمعے کی رات جب آئے، اگر تم رات کے آخری تہائی حصے میں قیام کر سکو تو کرو کیونکہ وہ مشہود ساعت ہے اور اس میں دعا قبول ہوتی ہے، اور یہی وہ بات ہے جو میرے بھائی یعقوب نے اپنے بیٹوں سے کہی تھی: میں عنقریب تمہارے لیے اپنے رب سے استغفار کروں گا، یعنی انہوں نے جمعے کی رات کا انتظار کیا۔ اگر نہ کر سکو تو درمیان رات میں قیام کرو، اگر نہ کر سکو تو اس کے شروع میں۔ چار رکعت نماز پڑھو: پہلی میں فاتحہ اور سورۃ یٰسین، دوسری میں فاتحہ اور حٰم السجدہ، تیسری میں فاتحہ اور حٰم الدخان، اور چوتھی میں فاتحہ اور تبارک المفصل پڑھو۔ جب تشہد سے فارغ ہو تو اللہ کی حمد کرو اور اچھی ثنا بیان کرو، مجھ پر اور تمام نبیوں پر درود بھیجو، اور اپنے ان بھائیوں کے لیے استغفار کرو جو ایمان میں تم سے سبقت لے گئے، اور مؤمن مردوں اور عورتوں کے لیے استغفار کرو، پھر آخر میں کہو: اے اللہ! جب تک تو مجھے زندہ رکھے گناہوں کو چھوڑنے کی توفیق دے کر مجھ پر رحم فرما، جو مجھے سے غرض نہیں اس کی تکلف سے مجھے بچا کر رحم فرما، اور جو تجھے مجھ سے راضی کرے اس میں اچھی نظر عطا فرما۔ اے اللہ! آسمانوں اور زمین کے پیدا کرنے والے، عزت و جلال والے، ایسی عزت والے جس کا مقابلہ نہیں ہو سکتا، میں تجھ سے سوال کرتا ہوں اے اللہ، اے رحمن، تیرے جلال اور تیرے چہرے کے نور کے واسطے سے کہ میرے دل کو اپنی کتاب کے حفظ پر مضبوط کر دے جیسا تو نے مجھے سکھایا ہے، اور مجھے توفیق دے کہ اسے اس طرح تلاوت کروں جو تجھے مجھ سے راضی کرے۔ اے اللہ! آسمانوں اور زمین کو پیدا کرنے والے، عزت و جلال والے، تجھ سے سوال کرتا ہوں اے اللہ، اے رحمن، تیرے جلال اور تیرے چہرے کے نور کے واسطے سے کہ اپنی کتاب سے میری نگاہ کو روشن فرما، اس سے میری زبان کو رواں کر، اس سے میرے دل کی تنگی دور کر، اس سے میرا سینہ کھول دے، اور اس سے میرے بدن کو مشغول رکھ، کیونکہ حق پر مجھے تیرے سوا کوئی مدد نہیں کرتا اور تیرے سوا کوئی اسے عطا نہیں کرتا، اور اللہ بلند و عظیم کے سوا کوئی طاقت اور قوت نہیں۔ اے ابو الحسن! یہ تین جمعے، یا پانچ، یا سات جمعے کرو، اللہ کے حکم سے قبول ہوگا۔ قسم اس ذات کی جس نے مجھے حق کے ساتھ بھیجا، کسی مؤمن نے ایسا کیا اور ناکام نہیں ہوا۔' حضرت عبد اللہ بن عباس نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! حضرت علی نے پانچ یا سات جمعے ہی گزارے تھے کہ اسی جیسی مجلس میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئے اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! پہلے میں چار آیتیں یا اتنی ہی سیکھتا تھا، جب خود کو سناتا تو نکل جاتیں، لیکن آج میں چالیس آیتیں یا اتنی ہی سیکھتا ہوں اور جب خود کو سناتا ہوں تو گویا اللہ کی کتاب میری آنکھوں کے سامنے ہے، اور پہلے حدیث سنتا تھا جب اسے دہرانا چاہتا تو بھول جاتی، لیکن آج احادیث سنتا ہوں اور جب بیان کرتا ہوں تو ایک حرف بھی نہیں چھوڑتا۔ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اس وقت فرمایا: 'رب کعبہ کی قسم مؤمن ہے، اے ابو الحسن!'
