English Translation
Narrated (from) Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him): Someone asked him about (the shares of) a daughter, a son's daughter, and a sister. He said, "Half is for the daughter and half is for the sister; and go to Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) and ask him, for I am certain he will give the same answer as mine." So he was asked, and the answer of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) was related to him. He said, "If I gave that answer I would go astray and never be rightly guided. In this matter I will rule as the Prophet (peace be upon him) ruled: for the daughter is half, for the son's daughter a sixth, making two thirds, and the remaining one third is for the sister." (The questioner says:) Then we came to Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him the ruling of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said, "As long as this scholar (that is, Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both)) is alive among you, do not ask me anything."
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ سےکسی نے بیٹی اور پوتی اور بہن (کے حصول) کی بابت سوال کیا تو انھوں نے کہا آدھا بیٹی کے لیے اور آدھا بہن کے لیے ہے اور تم ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما سے جا کر پوچھو یقین ہے کہ وہ بھی میرے ہی جیسا جواب دیں گے تو ان سے پوچھا گیا اور ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ کا جواب ان سے بیان کیا گیا تو انھوں نے کہا کہ اگر میں یہ جواب دوں تو گمراہ ہو جاؤں اور ہرگز ہدایت نہ پاؤں۔ میں اس میں وہی حکم لگاؤں گا جو نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے لگایا ہے۔ بیٹی کے لیے آدھا اور پوتی کے لیے چھٹا یہ دو تہائیاں ہو گئی اور باقی ایک تہائی بہن کے لیے ہے۔ (سائل کہتا ہے) کہ پھر ہم ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس آئے اور ہم نے ان سے ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما کا فتویٰ بیان کیا تو انھوں نے کہا جب تک یہ عالم (یعنی ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما) تم میں زندہ رہیں مجھ سے کبھی نہ پوچھنا۔[مختصر صحيح بخاري/حدیث: 2154]
