Hadrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrates that the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) sent cavalry towards Najd. They brought a man from Banu Hanifa called Thumama bin Uthal. They tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came to him and declared, 'What do you have, O Thumama?' He said, 'I have good in me, O Muhammad. If you kill, you kill a person whose blood can be avenged; if you show favour, you show favour to a grateful person; and if you want wealth, ask whatever you wish.' This continued until the next day when the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) again asked, 'What do you have, O Thumama?' He gave the same reply. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared, 'Release Thumama.' He went to a garden near the mosque, bathed, returned and entered the mosque and said, 'I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).'
Urdu Translation
حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے نجد کی طرف سوار بھیجے۔ وہ بنو حنیفہ کے ایک شخص کو لائے جس کا نام ثمامہ بن اثال تھا۔ انہوں نے اسے مسجد کے ستون سے باندھ دیا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اس کے پاس تشریف لائے اور ارشاد فرمایا: اے ثمامہ! تمہارے پاس کیا ہے؟ اس نے کہا: یا محمد! میرے پاس بھلائی ہے۔ اگر آپ قتل کریں تو ایسے شخص کو قتل کریں گے جس کا خون بہایا جا سکتا ہے، اگر احسان کریں تو ایسے شخص پر جو شکرگزار ہوگا، اور اگر آپ مال چاہتے ہیں تو جتنا چاہیں مانگیں۔ یہاں تک کہ اگلے دن آئے اور ارشاد فرمایا: اے ثمامہ! تمہارے پاس کیا ہے؟ اس نے وہی کہا۔ حضور صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: ثمامہ کو چھوڑ دو۔ وہ مسجد کے قریب ایک باغ میں گیا، غسل کیا اور واپس آ کر مسجد میں داخل ہوا اور کہا: میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور محمد (صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اللہ کے رسول ہیں۔
