English Translation
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Muqri informed us... from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to go out on al-Adha and al-Fitr and begin with the prayer. When he finished his prayer and gave the salutation, he would stand facing the people while they sat in their prayer rows. If he had a need regarding an expedition, he would mention it to the people, or if he had another need, he would command them. He used to say: Give charity, and most of those who gave charity were women. Then he would depart. This continued until Marwan ibn al-Hakam's time. I went out hand in hand with Marwan until we reached the prayer ground. Kathir ibn al-Salt had built a pulpit of clay and bricks. Marwan was trying to pull me toward the pulpit while I was pulling him toward the prayer area. When I saw what he was doing, I said: Where is starting with the prayer? He said: No, O Abu Sa'id, what you knew is gone. I said: Never! By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will never bring anything better than what I know - three times. Then he departed.
