وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ السُّكَّرِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الصَّفَّارِ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أنبأ مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْخِيَارِ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ ؓ وَهُوَ مَحْصُورٌ وَعَلِيٌّ ؓ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أُحْرَجُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ مَعَ هَؤُلَاءِ وَأَنْتَ الْإِمَامُ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ أَحْسَنُ مَا عَمِلَ النَّاسُ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ فَأَحْسِنْ مَعَهُمْ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ يُسِيئُونَ فَاجْتَنِبْ مُسِيئَهُمْ
English Translation
Aisha narrated: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said during his illness: Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. I said: When Abu Bakr stands in your place, the people cannot hear him due to his weeping. So order Umar to lead the people in prayer. He said: Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. Aisha said: I told Hafsah to tell him that when Abu Bakr stands in his place, the people cannot hear him, so order Umar. The Prophet said: You are indeed the companions of Yusuf! Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.'
