Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us: Muhammad ibn Bakr reported to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us: Ubaydullah ibn Umar ibn Maysarah narrated to us: Abdullah ibn Yazid narrated to us: Sa'id ibn Abi Ayyub narrated to us: Shurahil ibn Yazid al-Ma'afiri narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Rafi al-Tanukhi, who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "I would not care what I did if I drank tiryaq (theriac), or hung an amulet (tamimah), or composed poetry of my own accord [— all are alike to me in dislike]." And we have been given to narrate from Ibn Sirin that he used to dislike tiryaq because a snake is put into its making. Imam Ahmad said: For this reason al-Shafi'i disliked it, and said: "It is not permissible to consume tiryaq made with the flesh of snakes, except in a state of necessity, in which carrion [too] becomes permissible."
