English Translation
Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, from Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam, from Ibn Wahb, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Shurayh, from Muhammad ibn Sumayr, from Abu Ali al-Janbi, from Abu Rayhanah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on an expedition. He led us to a highland where severe cold struck us. Each of us would dig a hole, enter it, and cover himself with his shield. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw this, he said: Is there a man who will guard us tonight? I will pray to Allah for him with a supplication that will bring him great merit. A man from the Ansar stood and said: I will, O Messenger of Allah. He prayed for him. Abu Rayhanah said: I then said: I will also. He prayed for me with a supplication lesser than what he made for the Ansari. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The Fire is forbidden from an eye that wept out of fear of Allah. The Fire is forbidden from an eye that stayed awake in the cause of Allah. He said: I forgot the third. Abu Shurayh — meaning Abd al-Rahman ibn Shurayh — said: I later heard that he said: The Fire is forbidden from an eye that averted itself from what Allah has prohibited, or an eye that was lost (blinded) in the cause of Allah.
