English Translation
Abu 'Ubayd said: A woman would prick the back of her hand or her wrist with a needle or a large needle until it made a mark, then she would fill it with kohl or soot, and it would turn green. This is called washm (tattooing). As for al-mutafallijat, it refers to filing the teeth to create gaps, making them thin at the tips as in the teeth of young people. An older woman would do this to resemble them. This is the meaning of the statement of Abu 'Ubaydah and Abu 'Ubayd.
