English Translation
Abu al-Nadr told us, Abu Aqil told us, from Barakah ibn Ya'la al-Taymi, Abu Suwayd al-Abdi told me, who said: We came to Ibn Umar and sat at his door awaiting permission to enter, but permission was delayed for us. He said: So I got up to a small hole in the door and began peering through it; he noticed me. When permission was given to us and we sat down, he said, "Which of you was just now peering into my house?" I said, "It was I." He said, "By what right did you consider it permissible to peer into my house?" I said, "Permission was delayed for us, so I looked, but I did not do it deliberately." He said: Then they asked him about various matters, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, "Islam is built upon five pillars: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; establishing the prayer; giving the zakat; the pilgrimage to the House; and fasting Ramadan." I said, "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, what do you say about jihad?" He said, "Whoever strives, strives only for himself."
