حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْهَادِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ لَقِيَ نَاسًا خَرَجُوا مِنْ عِنْدِ مَرْوَانَ فَقَالَ مِنْ أَيْنَ جَاءَ هَؤُلَاءِ قَالُوا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ الْأَمِيرِ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ وَكُلُّ حَقٍّ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ تَكَلَّمْتُمْ بِهِ وَأَعَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَكُلُّ مُنْكَرٍ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ أَنْكَرْتُمُوهُ وَرَدَدْتُمُوهُ عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا لَا وَاللَّهِ بَلْ يَقُولُ مَا يُنْكَرُ فَنَقُولُ قَدْ أَصَبْتَ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ فَإِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ قُلْنَا قَاتَلَهُ اللَّهُ مَا أَظْلَمَهُ وَأَفْجَرَهُ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ كُنَّا بِعَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَعُدُّ هَذَا نِفَاقًا لِمَنْ كَانَ هَكَذَا.
English Translation
Ya'qub narrated to us: I heard my father relate, from Yazid - namely Ibn al-Had - from Umar ibn Abdullah, who related to him that Abdullah ibn Umar met some people who had come out from Marwan's presence, and he said: "Where have these come from?" They said: "We have come out from the Governor Marwan's presence." He said: "And did you speak up for every truth you saw and support it, and did you condemn and reject every wrong you saw?" They said: "No, by God; rather he says what is objectionable and we say, 'You are right, may God set you aright.' Then when we leave his presence we say, 'May God fight him, how unjust and wicked he is.'" Abdullah said: "In the time of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, we used to count this as hypocrisy for whoever behaved so."
