English Translation
Ya'qub told us: my father told us, from Salih ibn Kaysan, from al-Harith — I think he means Ibn Fudayl — from Ja'far ibn Abdullah ibn al-Hakam, from Abdul Rahman ibn al-Miswar, from Abu Rafi', from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "There has never been a prophet whom Allah, Mighty and Sublime, sent to a nation before me, except that he had disciples and companions from his nation who took to his practice and followed his command. Then there came after them successors who said what they did not do and did what they were not commanded to do."
