حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِمِنًى فَلَقِيَهُ عُثْمَانُ فَقَامَ مَعَهُ يُحَدِّثُهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَلَا نُزَوِّجُكَ جَارِيَةً شَابَّةً لَعَلَّهَا أَنْ تُذَكِّرَكَ مَا مَضَى مِنْ زَمَانِكَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَمَا لَئِنْ قُلْتَ ذَاكَ لَقَدْ قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ مَنْ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَعَلَيْهِ بِالصَّوْمِ فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ.
English Translation
Abu Mu'awiyah told us: al-A'mash told us, from Ibrahim, from Alqamah, who said: "I was walking with Abdullah at Mina, and Uthman met him and stood with him talking to him. Uthman said to him: 'O Abu Abd al-Rahman, shall we not marry you to a young girl, that she might remind you of times gone by?' Abdullah said: 'If you say that - the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to us: "O assembly of young men, whoever among you can afford marriage, let him marry, for it is more restraining for the eyes and more protective of chastity. And whoever cannot, let him fast, for it is a protection for him."'"
