حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ وَائِلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَقْطَعَهُ أَرْضًا قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَ مَعِي مُعَاوِيَةَ أَنْ أَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ أَوْ قَالَ أَعْلِمْهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي مُعَاوِيَةُ أَرْدِفْنِي خَلْفَكَ فَقُلْتُ لَا تَكُونُ مِنْ أَرْدَافِ الْمُلُوكِ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَعْطِنِي نَعْلَكَ فَقُلْتُ انْتَعِلْ ظِلَّ النَّاقَةِ قَالَ فَلَمَّا اسْتُخْلِفَ مُعَاوِيَةُ أَتَيْتُهُ فَأَقْعَدَنِي مَعَهُ عَلَى السَّرِيرِ فَذَكَّرَنِي الْحَدِيثَ فَقَالَ سِمَاكٌ فَقَالَ وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي كُنْتُ حَمَلْتُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ.
English Translation
Hajjaj told us, he said: Shu'bah informed us, from Simak ibn Harb, from Alqamah ibn Wa'il, from his father: that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him land as a fief. He said: He sent Mu'awiyah with me, [saying]: "Give it to him," or he said, "Show it to him." He said: Mu'awiyah said to me: "Let me ride behind you." I said: "You should not be among those who ride behind kings." He said: "Then give me your sandal." I said: "Wear the shade of the she-camel instead." He said: When Mu'awiyah became caliph, I came to him, and he seated me with him on the throne and reminded me of the hadith. Simak said: He said: "I wish I had carried him in front of me."
