English Translation
Bishr ibn Shu'ayb told us: My father told me, from al-Zuhri, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that A'isha, wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to the mosque, stood, and said the takbir. The people lined up behind him. He said the takbir and recited a long recitation, then said the takbir and bowed in a long bowing, then said, "Allah hears whoever praises Him," then stood up and did not prostrate, and recited a long recitation which was shorter than the first recitation, then said the takbir and bowed in a long bowing which was shorter than the first bowing, then said, "Allah hears whoever praises Him, our Lord, praise be to You," then prostrated. Then he did the same in the other rak'ah, completing four bowings and four prostrations. The sun cleared before he finished. Then he stood and praised Allah, Mighty and Sublime, as He deserves, then said: "These are two signs among the signs of Allah, Mighty and Sublime; they are not eclipsed for the death of anyone nor for his life. So when you see them, hasten to the prayer." And Kathir ibn Abbas used to relate that Abdullah ibn Abbas used to relate about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day the sun was eclipsed, the same as what Urwah related from A'isha, wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. So I said to Urwah: "But your brother said that on the day the sun was eclipsed in Madinah, he did not exceed two rak'ahs, like the dawn prayer." He said: "Yes, he made an error regarding the Sunnah."
