حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ حَدَّثَنَا كَثِيرُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلَّا تُقْبَضُ نَفْسُهُ ثُمَّ يَرَى الثَّوَابَ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّ إِلَيْهِ فَيُخَيَّرُ بَيْنَ أَنْ تُرَدَّ إِلَيْهِ إِلَى أَنْ يَلْحَقَ فَكُنْتُ قَدْ حَفِظْتُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ فَإِنِّي لَمُسْنِدَتُهُ إِلَى صَدْرِي فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى مَالَتْ عُنُقُهُ فَقُلْتُ قَدْ قَضَى قَالَتْ فَعَرَفْتُ الَّذِي قَالَ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى ارْتَفَعَ فَنَظَرَ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ إِذَنْ وَاللَّهِ لَا يَخْتَارُنَا فَقَالَ مَعَ الرَّفِيقِ الْأَعْلَى فِي الْجَنَّةِ { مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ } إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us: Kathir ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah, who said: Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say, "No prophet has his soul taken except that he is shown the reward that awaits him, then it is returned to him, and he is given the choice as to whether it be returned to him until he meets his Lord fully." She said: I had memorized that from him. So while I was leaning him against my chest, I looked at him until his neck tilted, and I said, "He has passed away." She said: Then I realized what he had said, so I looked at him until he was raised up, and he looked. She said: I said, "Then, by Allah, he will not choose us." He then said, "With the highest companions, in Paradise" — "with those whom Allah has favored, of the prophets and the truthful" — to the end of the verse.
