حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ وَأَبِي رَبِيعَةَ الْإِيَادِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ يَا عَلِيُّ لَا تُتْبِعْ النَّظْرَةَ النَّظْرَةَ فَإِنَّمَا لَكَ الْأُولَى وَلَيْسَتْ لَكَ الْآخِرَةُ.
English Translation
Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik told us: Sharik told us, from Abu Ishaq and Abu Rabi'ah al-Iyadi, from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Ali: O Ali, do not let one glance follow another, for the first is allowed to you but the next is not.
