حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالُوا لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ دَيْنٍ قَالُوا نَعَمْ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ لَهَا قَضَاءً قَالُوا لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا تَرَكَ لَهَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَصَلُّوا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قَضَيْتُ عَنْهُ أَتُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ قَالَ إِنْ قَضَيْتَ عَنْهُ بِالْوَفَاءِ صَلَّيْتُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ فَقَضَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ أَوْفَيْتَ مَا عَلَيْهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ.
English Translation
Affan told us, Abu Awana told us, from Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Mawhab, from Abdullah ibn Abi Qatada, from his father, who said: A man among us died, so we came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, so that he might pray over him. He said: Did he leave anything behind? They said: No, by Allah, he left nothing. He said: Did he leave any debt upon him? They said: Yes, eighteen dirhams. He said: Did he leave anything to pay it off? They said: No, by Allah, he left nothing for it. He said: Then pray over him yourselves. Abu Qatada said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think - if I pay it off on his behalf, will you pray over him? He said: If you pay it off on his behalf in full, I will pray over him. He said: So Abu Qatada went and paid it off on his behalf, then he said: Have you paid off in full what was owed by him? He said: Yes. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called for him and prayed over him.
