English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq told us, Ma'mar told us, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, that Usamah ibn Zayd informed him that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, rode a donkey with a saddle on it, under which was a Fadak-made cloak, and he seated Usamah ibn Zayd behind him, going to visit Sa'd ibn Ubadah among Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj - and that was before the battle of Badr - until he passed by a gathering which included a mixture of Muslims, polytheist idol-worshippers, and Jews, among whom was Abdullah ibn Ubayy, and in the gathering was also Abdullah ibn Rawahah. When the dust of the mount covered the gathering, Abdullah ibn Ubayy covered his nose with his garment and said: Do not raise dust upon us. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, greeted them, then he stopped, dismounted, called them to Allah, and recited the Qur'an to them. Abdullah ibn Ubayy said to him: O man, there is nothing better than this, if what you say is true, but do not annoy us in our gatherings; return to your mount, and whoever comes to you from us, relate it to him. Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: Come upon us in our gatherings, for we love that. Then the Muslims, the polytheists, and the Jews began cursing one another until they nearly came to blows. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, kept calming them down. Then he rode his mount until he entered upon Sa'd ibn Ubadah and said: O Sa'd, did you not hear what Abu Hubab said - meaning Abdullah ibn Ubayy - he said such-and-such. Sa'd said: Pardon him, O Messenger of Allah, and forgive him. By Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you, and the people of this town had agreed to crown him and wrap the turban of kingship on him. When Allah turned that away by the truth He gave you, he choked on that, and that is what caused him to act as you saw. So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, pardoned him. Hajjaj told us, Layth - that is, Ibn Sa'd - told us, Uqayl told me, from Ibn Shihab, from Urwah, that Usamah ibn Zayd informed him, and he mentioned its meaning, except that he said: the people of this town had gathered. Abu al-Yaman told us, Shu'ayb told us, from al-Zuhri, Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me, that Usamah ibn Zayd informed him that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, rode a donkey with a saddle on it, on which was a Fadak-made cloak, and he seated Usamah ibn Zayd behind him, going to visit Sa'd ibn Ubadah among Banu al-Khazraj before the battle of Badr, and he mentioned it, using a variant word for the town.
