حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سِنَانٍ سَعِيدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ عَنْ ابْنِ الدَّيْلَمِيِّ قَالَ لَقِيتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ إِنَّهُ قَدْ وَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي شَيْءٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْقَدَرِ فَحَدِّثْنِي بِشَيْءٍ لَعَلَّهُ يَذْهَبُ مِنْ قَلْبِي قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَذَّبَ أَهْلَ سَمَوَاتِهِ وَأَهْلَ أَرْضِهِ لَعَذَّبَهُمْ وَهُوَ غَيْرُ ظَالِمٍ لَهُمْ وَلَوْ رَحِمَهُمْ كَانَتْ رَحْمَتُهُ لَهُمْ خَيْرًا مِنْ أَعْمَالِهِمْ وَلَوْ أَنْفَقْتَ جَبَلَ أُحُدٍ ذَهَبًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مَا قَبِلَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْكَ حَتَّى تُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ وَتَعْلَمَ أَنَّ مَا أَصَابَكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيُخْطِئَكَ وَمَا أَخْطَأَكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيُصِيبَكَ وَلَوْ مِتَّ عَلَى غَيْرِ ذَلِكَ لَدَخَلْتَ النَّارَ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ حُذَيْفَةَ فَقَالَ لِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ لِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَأَتَيْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ.
English Translation
Yahya ibn Sa'id told us: Sufyan told us: Abu Sinan Sa'id ibn Sinan told us: Wahb ibn Khalid told us, from Ibn al-Daylami, who said: I met Ubayy ibn Ka'b and said: "O Abu al-Mundhir, something has occurred to me regarding this matter of divine decree, so tell me something that might remove it from my heart." He said: "If Allah were to punish the people of His heavens and the people of His earth, He would punish them, and He would not be unjust to them; and if He were to show them mercy, His mercy for them would be better than their deeds. And if you were to spend Mount Uhud in gold in the way of Allah, Mighty and Sublime, Allah would not accept it from you until you believe in the divine decree and know that what has befallen you was not going to miss you, and what has missed you was not going to befall you; and if you were to die holding any belief other than this, you would enter the Fire." He said: So I went to Hudhayfa, and he told me the same; and I went to Ibn Mas'ud, and he told me the same; and I went to Zayd ibn Thabit, and he narrated to me from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the same.
