English Translation
Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us: Ubaydullah ibn Amr narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: While we were in rows behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the Dhuhr or Asr prayer, we saw him reach out for something in front of him as if to take it, while he was in prayer, then reach for it again as if to take it, then he was prevented from it. Then he drew back and we drew back, then he drew back a second time and we drew back. When he gave the closing salutation, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "O Messenger of Allah, we saw you today doing something in your prayer that you had not been accustomed to do." He said: "Paradise was displayed to me with all its splendor in it, and I reached out to take a cluster of its grapes to bring to you, but had I taken it, everyone between heaven and earth would have eaten from it without it diminishing at all; then I was prevented from it. Then the Fire was displayed to me, and when I felt the heat of its blaze I drew back. The majority of those I saw in it were women who, when entrusted with something, betrayed the trust" -- my father said: Zakariyya ibn Adiyy said "were overly demanding" -- "and when given something, were not grateful. And I saw in it Luhayy ibn Amr dragging his intestines, and the one I saw most resembling him was Ma'bad ibn Aktham." Ma'bad said: "O Messenger of Allah, I fear for myself because of his resemblance to me, for he is my forefather." He said: "No, you are a believer and he is a disbeliever, and he was the first to bring the Arabs together upon idol-worship." Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us: Ubaydullah -- meaning Ibn Amr -- narrated to us: Abdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from At-Tufayl ibn Ubayy, from his father, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similarly.
