English Translation
'Ali ibn 'Ayyash al-Himsi told us, Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah told us -- and by another chain, Abu al-Yaman informed us, Shu'ayb informed us, and al-Zuhri said: 'Abdullah ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal told me, from 'Abdullah ibn Khabbab, from his father Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, client of Banu Zuhrah, who had witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: I watched the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, one night as he prayed the whole night through until it was near dawn. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, finished his prayer with the closing salutation, Khabbab came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you prayed tonight a prayer the like of which I have never seen you pray." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Yes, it was a prayer of hope and fear. I asked my Lord, blessed and exalted is He, for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked my Lord, blessed and exalted is He, that He not destroy us as He destroyed the nations before us, and He granted it to me. And I asked my Lord, mighty and glorious is He, that He not let an enemy other than ourselves overcome us, and He granted it to me. And I asked my Lord, blessed and exalted is He, that He not make us divided into factions, and He withheld that from me." 'Abdullah said: I heard my father say: 'Ali ibn 'Ayyash heard this hadith directly from Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah.
