English Translation
Sulayman ibn Dawud told us, Thabit Abu Zayd told us, 'Asim al-Ahwal told us, Fudayl ibn Zayd al-Raqashi told me -- 'Abd al-Samad said in his narration, from Fudayl ibn Zayd, who had gone on seven military campaigns with 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him -- he said: I asked 'Abdullah ibn Mughaffal al-Muzani, "What drink has been forbidden to us?" He said, "Wine." I said, "Is this in the Qur'an?" He said, "I will only tell you what I heard Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him -- or the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him" -- he said, either he began with "the Messenger" or he began with the name -- so I said, "It is enough for me; I am satisfied." He said: He forbade the hantam, which is the clay jar; and he forbade the dubba', which is the gourd; and he forbade the muzaffat, which is anything smeared with pitch, whether a waterskin or other; and he forbade the naqir. He said: When I heard that, I bought a leather skin, and here it is, hung up, in which nabidh is made.
