English Translation
Yunus told us: Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Yashkuri told us: an elderly shaykh from Banu Uqayl, called Abd al-Majid al-Uqayli, told us, who said: We set out as pilgrims in the nights when Yazid ibn al-Muhallab departed [on his campaign], and it had been mentioned to us that there was a water-source in al-Aliyah called al-Zujayj. When we had finished our rites, we came until we reached al-Zujayj and made our camels kneel. He said: We then went on until we came upon a well where there were elderly men with dyed [hair] talking. He said: We said: "Is this the one who accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Where is his house?" They said: "Yes, he accompanied him, and that there is his house." So we went on until we reached the house and greeted [him]. He said: He gave us permission [to enter], and there he was, an elderly shaykh lying down, called al-Adda' ibn Khalid al-Kilabi. I said: "Are you the one who accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, and were it not for it being night, I would have read to you the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to me." He said: "Who are you [people]?" We said: "From the people of Basra." He said: "Welcome to you; what has Yazid ibn al-Muhallab been doing?" We said: "He is there, calling to the Book of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, and to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "In what way is he doing that? In what way is he doing that?" I said: "Which of them should we follow - these or those?" - meaning the people of Syria or Yazid. He said: "If you remain seated [and stay out of it], you will succeed and be rightly guided; if you remain seated, you will succeed and be rightly guided" - I do not know it except that he said it three times - "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Day of Arafah, standing in the stirrups, calling out at the top of his voice: 'O people, what day is this day of yours?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'What month is this month of yours?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'What land is this land of yours?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'Your day is a sacred day, your month is a sacred month, and your land is a sacred land.'" He said: "Then he said: 'Behold, your blood and your wealth are sacred to you as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord, Blessed and Exalted, and He questions you about your deeds.'" He said: "Then he raised his hands to the sky and said: 'O Allah, bear witness against them! O Allah, bear witness against them!' - he repeated it several times, and I do not know how many times he said it."
