English Translation

Abd al-Razzaq told us, al-Thawri told us, my father told me, from al-Sha'bi, from Sam'an ibn Mushannaj, from Samurah ibn Jundub, who said: We were with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at a funeral, and he said, 'Is anyone here from the tribe of so-and-so?' saying it three times. A man stood up, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: 'What kept you, in the first two times, from answering me? I only called out your tribe's name for good — so-and-so, a man from among them, has died, and he is held bound by his debt.' He said: I saw his family and those who grieved for him pay off his debt until no one came demanding anything from him. Affan told us, Abu Awanah told us, from Firas, from al-Sha'bi, from Samurah, and he mentioned the hadith. Abu Sufyan al-Ma'mari told us, from Sufyan, from his father, from al-Sha'bi, from Sam'an ibn Mushannaj, from Samurah ibn Jundub, and he mentioned the hadith. Abd Allah told us, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah told us, Waki' told us, from his father, from Sa'id ibn Masruq, from al-Sha'bi, and he mentioned this hadith; I related it to my father, and he said, 'I did not hear it from Waki'.'
