حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَابِسٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ الْحِجَامَةِ وَالْمُوَاصَلَةِ وَلَمْ يُحَرِّمْهَا إِبْقَاءً عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ إِلَى السَّحَرِ فَقَالَ إِنْ أُوَاصِلُ إِلَى السَّحَرِ فَرَبِّي يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِي.
English Translation
Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi told us, from Sufyan, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abis, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: A man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cupping and continuous fasting, but did not make it forbidden, only wishing to spare his Companions. It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, you yourself fast continuously until the pre-dawn hour." He said: "If I fast continuously until the pre-dawn hour, my Lord feeds me and gives me drink."
