English Translation
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from Sulaym ibn 'Amir, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, who said: We were encamped with Mu'awiyah after the killing of 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, when Ka'b ibn Murrah al-Bahzi stood up and said, 'Were it not for something I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, I would not have stood in this place.' When he mentioned the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he made the people sit down, then said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, may Allah Most High be pleased with him, passed by with his hair combed, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'A tribulation will come out from beneath the feet of — or from between the legs of — this man; this man, on that day, and whoever follows him, will be upon guidance.' He said: Ibn Hawalah al-Azdi then stood up from beside the pulpit and said, 'Are you indeed the one meant?' He said, 'Yes.' He said: By Allah, I was present at that gathering, and had I known that I had a supporter among the army, I would have been the first to speak of it.
