English Translation
Affan told us, al-Aswad ibn Shayban told us, he said: Abu Nawfal ibn Abi Aqrab told us, he said: Amr ibn al-As showed intense distress at the time of death. When his son Abdullah ibn Amr saw that, he said, "O Abu Abdullah, what is this distress, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to bring you close and employ you?" He said, "O my son, that is true, and I will tell you about it. By Allah, I do not know whether that was out of love for me, or as a means of winning me over, but I bear witness concerning two men that when he left this world he loved them: Ibn Sumayyah [Ammar] and Ibn Umm Abd [Ibn Mas'ud]." When he had said this, he placed his hand at the soft spot beneath his chin and said, "O Allah, You commanded us and we neglected; You forbade us and we transgressed; nothing avails us except Your forgiveness." And that remained his refrain until he died.
