English Translation
Abdullah ibn Ja'far said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dispatched an army and appointed Zayd ibn Harithah as their commander. He said: 'If Zayd is killed, then your commander is Ja'far. If Ja'far is killed, then your commander is Abdullah ibn Rawahah.' They met the enemy. Zayd took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Ja'far took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Abdullah ibn Rawahah took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Khalid ibn al-Walid took the banner and Allah granted him victory. News reached the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he went out to the people. He praised Allah and said: 'Your brothers met the enemy. Zayd took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Ja'far took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Abdullah ibn Rawahah took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then a sword from the swords of Allah — Khalid ibn al-Walid — took the banner and Allah granted him victory.' He waited three days before visiting the family of Ja'far. Then he came and said: 'Do not weep for my brother after today. Bring me the sons of my brother.' We were brought looking like young birds. He called for a barber who shaved our heads. Then he said: 'Muhammad resembles our uncle Abu Talib, and Abdullah resembles my appearance and character.' He took my hand and raised it and said: 'O Allah, be the successor of Ja'far in his family, and bless Abdullah in the work of his hand' — three times. Our mother came and mentioned our orphanhood. The Prophet said: 'Do you fear poverty for them while I am their guardian in this world and the Hereafter?'
