English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ubayd told us, Muhammad — meaning Ibn Ishaq — told us, Yazid ibn Abi Habib told me, from Marthad ibn Abd Allah al-Yazani, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Juhani, who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, two riders appeared. When he saw them he said: Two men of Kindah, two men of Madhhij — until they came to him, and indeed they were men from Madhhij. One of them came near him to pledge allegiance to him. When he took his hand, he said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of one who sees you, believes in you, affirms you as true, and follows you — what will he have? He said: Blessed is he. Then he released his hand and departed. Then the other came forward and took his hand to pledge allegiance, and said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of one who believes in you, affirms you as true, and follows you, but has not seen you? He said: Blessed is he, then blessed is he, then blessed is he. Then he released his hand and departed.
