English Translation
Yunus told us: Hammad — that is, Ibn Salamah — told us, from Yunus ibn Ubayd, from Humayd ibn Hilal, who said: A man brought Bishr ibn Asim and me together, and he told me, from Uqbah ibn Malik, that a raiding party of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, surprised the people of a watering place at dawn. A man from the people of the water came forward, and a man from the Muslims charged upon him; he said, "I am a Muslim," but he killed him. When they returned, they informed the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, of that. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood delivering a sermon; he praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Now then — what is wrong with the Muslim who kills a man while he is saying, 'I am a Muslim'?" The man said: "He only said it seeking protection." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned his face away and stretched out his right hand and said: "Allah refuses (to accept any excuse from) me for one who kills a Muslim" — three times.
