English Translation

He said: Yunus ibn Muhammad told us: Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Ghasil told us: Asid ibn Ali told me, from his father Ali ibn Ubayd, from Abu Usayd, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him — he had been present at Badr and was their freedman — who said: Abu Usayd said: 'While I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a man from the Ansar came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is there any act of dutifulness toward my parents still left for me to do after their death, by which I may honor them?" He said, "Yes — four things: praying for them, seeking forgiveness for them, fulfilling their pledges, honoring their friend, and maintaining the ties of kinship that exist for you only through them — that is what remains of dutifulness toward them after their death."'
