حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ خُبَيْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُعَلَّى قَالَ كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي فَمَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَدَعَانِي فَلَمْ آتِهِ حَتَّى صَلَّيْتُ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي فَقَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي قَالَ أَلَمْ يَقُلْ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ } ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكُمْ أَعْظَمَ سُورَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ مِنْ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيَخْرُجَ فَذَكَّرْتُهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ هِيَ السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنُ الْعَظِيمُ الَّذِي أُوتِيتُهُ.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Khubayb ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Hafs ibn Asim, from Abu Sa'id ibn al-Mu'alla, who said: I was praying when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by me and called me, but I did not go to him until I had finished my prayer. Then I went to him, and he said: "What kept you from coming to me?" I said: "I was praying." He said: "Did Allah, Blessed and Exalted, not say: 'O you who believe, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life'?" Then he said: "Shall I not teach you the greatest surah in the Qur'an before I leave the mosque?" He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then set out to leave, so I reminded him, and he said: "Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbi l-'alamin - it is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Magnificent Qur'an which I have been given."
