حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ الْخِرِّيتِ عَنْ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ قَالَ أُرْسِلَتْ الْخَيْلُ زَمَنَ الْحَجَّاجِ وَالْحَكَمُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ أَمِيرٌ عَلَى الْبَصْرَةِ قَالَ فَأَتَيْنَا الرِّهَانَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَتْ الْخَيْلُ قُلْنَا لَوْ مِلْنَا إِلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ أَكُنْتُمْ تُرَاهِنُونَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ وَهُوَ فِي قَصْرِهِ فِي الزَّاوِيَةِ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ فَقُلْنَا يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ أَكُنْتُمْ تُرَاهِنُونَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُرَاهِنُ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ رَاهَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهُ سَبْحَةٌ فَسَبَقَ النَّاسَ فَانْتَشَى لِذَلِكَ وَأَعْجَبَهُ.
English Translation
Affan told us: Sa'id ibn Zayd told us, he said: al-Zubayr ibn al-Khirrit told me, from Abu Labid, he said: The horses were released for a race in the time of al-Hajjaj, while al-Hakam ibn Ayyub was governor over Basra. He said: We came to the racecourse, and when the horses came, we said: "What if we went to Anas ibn Malik and asked him: Did you race for wagers in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" So we went to him while he was in his mansion, in the corner, and we asked him. We said: "O Abu Hamza, did you race for wagers in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? Did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, race for wagers?" He said: "Yes, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, raced with a horse of his called Sabha, and it outran the people, and he was delighted and pleased by that."
