Bahz told us: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah told us, from Thabit, from Anas, who said, "A son of Abu Talhah, from Umm Sulaym, died, and she said to her household, 'Do not tell Abu Talhah about his son until I am the one who tells him.'" He said: He came, and she brought him supper, and he ate and drank. Then she adorned herself for him more beautifully than she had ever done before, and he had relations with her. When she saw that he was satisfied and had had his fill of her, she said, "O Abu Talhah, tell me: if some people lent something of theirs to a household, and then asked for their loan back, would it be right for them to refuse to return it?" He said, "No." She said, "Then reckon your son as returned to his true Owner." He said: So he went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him what had happened. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "May Allah bless the remainder of your night, both of you." He said: So she conceived. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was on a journey and she was with him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he came to Medina from a journey, would not enter it by night. When they drew near Medina, she went into labor, and Abu Talhah was held back with her while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went on ahead. Abu Talhah said, "O Lord, You know that it pleases me to go out with Your Messenger when he goes out, and to enter with him when he enters, and I have been held back as you see." He said: Umm Sulaym said, "O Abu Talhah, I no longer feel what I was feeling," so we set off. He said: Then she went into labor when they arrived, and she gave birth to a boy. She said to me, "O Anas, let no one nurse him until you take him in the morning to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." He said: So when morning came I carried him and set off with him to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: I found him with a branding iron in hand. When he saw me he said, "Perhaps Umm Sulaym has given birth?" I said, "Yes." He put down the branding iron. He said: I brought the child and placed him in his lap. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called for some 'ajwah dates of Medina, chewed them in his mouth until they softened, then put them in the child's mouth. The child began to smack his lips, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "See how the Ansar love dates!" Then he wiped his face and named him 'Abdullah.
