English Translation
Bahz told us, and Hashim told us, they said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah told us, from Thabit, from Anas, who said, "When Zaynab's waiting period ended, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Zayd, 'Go and mention marriage to her on my behalf.'" He said: So he set out until he came to her, and she was kneading her dough. When I saw her, she loomed so large in my chest that I could not bear to look at her, knowing that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had mentioned her for marriage. So I turned my back to her and hurried away on my heels, and said, "O Zaynab, rejoice! The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has sent me to mention you for marriage." She said, "I will do nothing until I consult my Lord, Mighty and Majestic." So she got up and went to her place of prayer, and the Qur'an was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came and entered upon her without seeking permission. He said: I certainly recall that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, fed us bread and meat — Hashim said, when I knew that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had proposed to her. Hashim said in his narration: I certainly recall, when she was brought in to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, we were fed bread and meat. Then the people left, but some men remained talking in the house after the meal. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out and I followed him, and he went around to the apartments of his wives, greeting them, and they would say, "O Messenger of Allah, how did you find your wife?" He said: I do not know whether I told him that the people had left, or whether he was told. He said: Then he went until he entered the house, and I went to enter with him, but he dropped the curtain between me and him, and the verse of the veil was revealed. He said: And the people were admonished with what they were admonished with. Hashim said in his narration: "Do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, without awaiting its readiness, nor lingering for conversation. Indeed, that troubles the Prophet, and he is shy of dismissing you, but Allah is not shy of the truth."
