English Translation
Muhammad ibn Salamah al-Harrani told us, from Hisham, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, who said: Anas ibn Malik was asked about the dye of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had hardly gone grey at all, but Abu Bakr and Umar after him dyed their hair with henna and katam. He said: And Abu Bakr brought his father Abu Quhafah to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of the conquest of Mecca, carrying him until he set him down before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Abu Bakr: "Had you left the old man in his house, we would have come to him" -- as an honor to Abu Bakr. So he accepted Islam, his beard and head being as white as thagham. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Change it, and keep him away from black."
