Narrated Shaqiq: I was sitting with Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) and Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with them both). Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman (this is the kunyah of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him), if a person becomes ritually impure (janabah) and cannot find water for a month, what should he do about prayer?" Abdullah said: "He should not perform tayammum even if he does not find water for a month." Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then what about this verse in Surah al-Ma'idah: 'If you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth'?" Abdullah said: "If they were given permission by this verse to perform tayammum for major ritual impurity, then gradually they would also start performing tayammum whenever the water was cold." Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Have you not heard the hadith of Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent me on an errand, and there I became ritually impure and found no water, so I rolled in the dust as an animal rolls. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and told him, and he said: It would have been enough for you to do thus with your two hands. Then he struck both hands on the ground once and struck the left hand upon the right hand, then wiped the backs of his palms and his face." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You know that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not satisfied with the hadith of Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)." (Ibn Mas'ud and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, held the view that tayammum is not sufficient for major ritual impurity. But it is established from the ahadith that they retracted from this position.)

شقیق کہتے ہیں کہمیں سیدنا عبداللہ (بن مسعود) اور سیدنا ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہما کے پاس بیٹھا ہوا تھا۔ سیدنا ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اے ابوعبدالرحمن (یہ کنیت ہے ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما کی) اگر کسی شخص کو جنابت ہو اور ایک مہینے تک پانی نہ ملے تو وہ نماز کا کیا کرے؟ سیدنا عبداللہ نے کہا کہ اسے ایک مہینہ تک بھی پانی نہ ملے تو بھی تیمم نہ کرے۔ سیدنا ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ پھر سورۃ المائدہ میں یہ جو آیت ہے کہ”پانی نہ پاؤ تو پاک مٹی سے تیمم کرو“اس کا کیا حکم ہے؟ سیدنا عبداللہ نے کہا کہ اگر اس آیت سے ان کو جنابت میں تیمم کرنے کی اجازت دی گی تو وہ رفتہ رفتہ پانی ٹھنڈا ہونے کی صورت میں بھی تیمم کرنے لگ جائیں گے۔ سیدنا ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ تم نے سیدنا عمار رضی اللہ عنہ کی حدیث نہیں سنی کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے مجھے ایک کام کو بھیجا، وہاں میں جنبی ہو گیا اور پانی نہ ملا تو میں خاک میں اس طرح سے لیٹا جیسے جانور لیٹتا ہے۔ اس کے بعد رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس آیا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے بیان کیا تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ تجھے دونوں ہاتھوں سے اس طرح کرنا کافی تھا۔ پھر آپ نے دونوں ہاتھ زمین پر ایک بار مارے اور بائیں ہاتھ کو داہنے ہاتھ پر مارا۔ پھر ہتھیلیوں کی پشت اور منہ پر مسح کیا۔ سیدنا عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ تم جانتے ہو کہ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے سیدنا عمار رضی اللہ عنہ کی حدیث پر قناعت نہیں کی۔ (سیدنا ابن مسعود اور عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کا خیال تھا کہ جنابت سے تیمم کافی نہیں ہے۔ لیکن احادیث سے ثابت ہے کہ انہوں نے اپنے اس موقف سے رجوع کر لیا تھا)[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 166]
