Husayn bin al-Mundhir Abu Sasan says: I was present with Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) when al-Walid bin Uqbah was brought, having prayed the two morning rak'ahs and then said: "Shall I increase for you?" Then two men testified against al-Walid, one of whom was Humran, that he had drunk wine. The other testified that he had seen him vomiting wine. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Had he not drunk wine, why would he vomit wine?" Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Get up and impose the prescribed punishment on him" (this Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, ordered in order to raise the honor and standing of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, and this is permissible for the imam). Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Hasan, get up and lash him." Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Uthman has taken the cool of the caliphate, so place the heat upon him too." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry with Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) over this and said: "O Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), get up and lash al-Walid." (He) lashed him, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) counted. When he had given forty lashes, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Stop now." Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave forty lashes, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also gave forty, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave eighty lashes, and all are Sunnah; and in my view (giving forty) is preferable." حضین بن مندر ابوساسان کہتے ہیں کہمیں سیدنا عثمان بن عفان رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس موجود تھا کہ ولید بن عقبہ کو لایا گیا کہ انہوں نے صبح کی دو رکعتیں پڑھی تھیں پھر کہا کہ میں زیادہ کرتا ہوں تمہارے لئے۔ تو دو آدمیوں نے ولید پر گواہی دی جن میں سے ایک حمران تھا کہ اس نے شراب پی ہے۔ دوسرے نے یہ گواہی دی کہ وہ میرے سامنے (شراب کی) قے کر رہا تھا۔ سیدنا عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اگر اس نے شراب نہ پی ہوتی، تو شراب کی قے کیوں کرتا؟ سیدنا عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ نے سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو کہا کہ اٹھو اس کو حد لگاؤ (یہ سیدنا عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ نے سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کی عزت اور عظمت بڑھانے کے لئے حکم دیا اور امام کو یہ امر جائز ہے)۔ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے سیدنا حسن رضی اللہ عنہ سے فرمایا کہ اے حسن! اٹھ اور اس کو کوڑے لگا۔ سیدنا حسن رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ عثمان خلافت کا سرد لے چکے ہیں تو گرم بھی انہی پر رکھو۔ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ اس بات پر حسن رضی اللہ عنہ سے غصہ ہوئے اور کہا کہ اے عبداللہ بن جعفر رضی اللہ عنہ! اٹھ اور ولید کو کوڑے لگا۔ (انہوں نے) کوڑے لگائے اور سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ گنتے جاتے تھے۔ جب چالیس کوڑے لگائے، تو سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ بس ٹھہر جا۔ پھر کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے چالیس کوڑے لگائے اور سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے بھی چالیس لگائے اور سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے اسی کوڑے لگائے اور سب سنت ہیں اور میرے نزدیک (یہ چالیس لگانا) زیادہ بہتر ہے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1047]
