Anas ibn Malik narrated: When Monday came, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) lifted the curtain of the chamber and saw Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) leading the people in prayer. He said: I looked at his face as if it were a page of the Quran, and he was smiling. We almost became distracted in our prayer from joy at seeing the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to step back when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) signaled to him: 'Stay as you are.' Then he lowered the curtain and passed away that day. Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has not died, but he has been called to Him just as Moses was called to Him, and he stayed among his people for forty nights. By Allah, I hope that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) will live to cut off the hands and tongues of men among the hypocrites who claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has died. Al-Zuhri said: Anas ibn Malik informed me that he heard the last sermon of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he sat on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and that was the day after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away. He said: Umar testified to faith while Abu Bakr remained silent, not speaking. Then he said: As for what follows, I said yesterday a statement, and indeed it was not as I said. By Allah, I did not find the statement that I said in any Book that Allah revealed, nor in any covenant that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made to me. But I was hoping that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would live to outlive us all - meaning to be the last of them. If Muhammad (peace be upon him) has died, then Allah has placed among you a light by which you can be guided, so hold fast to it and you will be guided by what guided Muhammad (peace be upon him). Indeed, Abu Bakr is the companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the second of two, and he is the most entitled of people to your affairs. So stand up and pledge allegiance to him. A group of them had already pledged allegiance to him before that in the Saqifah of Bani Sa'idah, and the general pledge of allegiance was on the pulpit.
